This past October I went for a relaxing visit with my sister Mary in Texas. While there Mary gave me my first "hands on" quilting instruction. She has been quilting since the 1980's and so finds the process easy. I am starting off using a hoop to quilt in, not an easy method but all I have at the moment. As I began the process I found "it's not easy!", not near as easy as piecing a quilt :-) . I will be starting at the center and working my way outwards.

First stitches |
One thing I learned about the quilting process is that there is a lot of fine coordination between fingers and needle. I had to establish a rhythm first (called rocking the needle) and then it started to go smoother. My first stitches are slightly uneven, but I've been assured stitch quality will improve the more I work at it, and that some of the uneven stitches are due to the size of squares and numerous seams in this quilt.

Your stitching looks really good. All nice and straight. Glad to see you back in the blog world. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYour stitching looks great! Much better than mine. Like you, I'm just learning to hand quilt and have started on a special project. Loved looking through your blog at the progress you've made. That quilt will be AWESOME when it's quilted and bound. :)
ReplyDeleteGirl.. You are my hero! My friend and I both have the entire collection of Cross Stitch and Country Crafts and this was by far our most favorite pattern... it and the little boy with the airplane and toys that go with her. (if you haven't seen him..well.. there's another quilt for you..ha!)
ReplyDeleteI never got the nerve up to do the cross stitch, let alone make a quilt pattern and do a quilt!
bravo!
Thank you for your very nice comment! This quilt has been a labor of love for my children. I too still have all my books and the one with the little boy/toys. I have thought of doing another, but this one has taken such a long time, I'll not attempt anything major till it is finished. Thanks again for stopping by!
DeleteThat looks like quite an ambitious project, well done!
